How to Compare Text Online

Paste two fragments of texts or open 2 files and compare text online in one click! Get the perfect presentation report, that can be saved on disk or sent by email.

Open your Files and Get the Difference

  1. Open the compare text online page on xlCompare.com

  2. Select Your Files or Paste the Text

    To start you need to select the text file on your computer using the Open button. Also, you can just drop your file into FILE 1 area from Windows Explorer.

    If your text is in the Clipboard – paste it into window using FILE 1 area by pressing Ctrl+V or using Paste command from the context (right-click) menu.

    Repeat the same action for the right panel FILE 2.

    In this example we've loaded fragment of the C++ code into this page.

    Select text for comparison

    Make sure that file type TEXT is selected in the top panel. File type selector is important, because for different type of files xlCompare.com uses different input fields.

  3. Click the Compare Text button

    When text in areas FILE 1 and FILE 2 is ready to be compared – click the Compare Text button.

    This button starts the comparison procedure and presents you with a comparison report on your screen.

    Report with differences

    The result of comparison is a window that contains all the differences highlighted with color. Every new line in FILE 1 is highlighted with a green background color.

    New Lines

    Every new line is highlighted with color. In the left panel (FILE 1) with green and in the right one (FILE 2) with red.

    In our example lines 2226,2227 and 2229 are not present in the FILE 1, so they are highlighted with red background.

    Changed Lines

    Lines 2226-2228 has some changes, highlighted with orange background color. In this example line in the FILE 2 has 2 extra tabulation characters on the beginning.

    Details Panel

    Below the text panels xlCompare.com displays 2 selected lines of text one above another. Details panel helps you clearly identify the differences between 2 lines of text.

  4. Save the Report

    If you need to save the report on disk for future use or to send it by email, client the Save Report command. This button became enabled after you get the comparison report on your screen.

    Save Report command saved results of the comparison into the Downloads folder in HTML format.

    Now you can save this file by email or open it and copy the contents into another document.

  5. Files are not transmitted to the Internet

    xlCompare.com works in your browser. Your data doesn't leave your computer. You can disable Internet connection and still use our online application to compare yout texts.
